Cruz Azul’s Larcamon urges caution over Monterrey’s 2nd leg challenge

March 16 – Reigning champions Cruz Azul will start as favourites against CF Monterrey to progress to the last eight of the Champions Cup on Tuesday.

The Liga MX leaders go into the second leg with a one-goal advantage, having beaten Monterrey 3-2 away from home.

With 10 minutes left to play in the first leg Cruz Azul were 2-1 down, but the tide turned when Gonzalo Piovi levelled it for La Maquina with a penalty in the 84th minute, before Nicolás Ibáñez finished it off with a stunning volley from a Lucas Ocampo cross in the 90th minute.

Cruz Azul coach Nicolas Larcamon (pictured) is not taking things for granted saying that they need to remain calm and that there was still a very tough 90 minutes to come.

Both clubs go into the second leg coming off draws in Liga MX last weekend.

Monterrey are desperate to get their season on track and the Champions Cup offers them the best chance of silverware. They will need another big performance from Roberto de la Rosa who scored both goals for Rayados in the first leg.

With away goals counting as the tie-breaker, Monterrey have to win by two, or score more than three if the game is tight.

The winner of this series will meet LAFC or LD Alajuense in the quarterfinals.
