Japan edge North Korea to U20 Women’s Asian Cup title ahead of World Cup in Poland

April 20 – Japan underlined their dominance at youth level by lifting the AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup title for a seventh time, edging current U20 world champions North Korea 1-0 in the final in Thailand on Saturday.

The decider at the 25,000-seater Thammasat Stadium was tight and, for long stretches, tilted towards the defending champions. North Korea arrived to the final with momentum and a strong track record – five wins, 25 goals scored and none conceded – and controlled much of the first half without finding a breakthrough.

Japan’s decisive moment came in the 56th minute when Momoka Sano headed home what proved to be the winner.

Beyond the result, the tournament, expanded to 12 teams for this edition, offered another snapshot of the continued rise in performance levels of women’s football across Asia.

There was also qualification to the FIFA U20 World Cup this autumn at stake, with all four of the semi finalists – Japan, North Korea, China and South Korea – securing their places at the tournament in Poland later this year.

Japan’s latest title backs up a well-established development model that continues to produce technically strong, tactically disciplined players capable of transitioning to senior level. For the wider confederation, the competitiveness of this edition – and the profile of its qualifiers – points to a maturing landscape, with multiple nations now consistently operating at a high level in the women’s game.

AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa highlighted the importance of the expansion of the finals, saying: “We must acknowledge the collective contributions of all 12 Participating Member Associations, including the landmark debut of Bangladesh. The presence of a broader field of competitors not only enriches the diversity of the tournament but also accelerates the development of the game in every corner of the Continent, narrowing the gap in quality across our Member Associations.”
