EFL boosts ‘home-grown’ rule and requirement for club-developed players

April 7 – English Football League (EFL) teams will have to increase the minimum number of home-grown players in their match-day squads from next season and from 2018-19 will have to make way for at least one ‘club-developed’ player.

April 7 – Qatar has agreed to heavily slash its budget for hosting the 2022 World Cup and is pressing ahead with eight stadiums, according to organising chief Hassan Al Thawadi.

April 6 – With 72 days left until the kick-off of the 2017 Confederations Cup, less than a third of the event’s tickets have been sold. The domestic TV rights for the tournament and the World Cup finals also remain problematic.

China’s Hisense switched on for 2018 FIFA World Cup sponsorship

April 6 – FIFA’s struggle to sign up commercial partners to its reformed vision and upcoming World Cup in Russia was given some much-needed relief with confirmation that China’s Hisense, a white goods and electronics company based in the east-coast city of Qingdao, has put its name to the 2017 Confederations Cup and 2018 World Cup as an official sponsor.

Israeli press watchdog accuses Palestine’s Rajoub of inciting violence

April 6 – An Israeli-based media watchdog is back on the offensive over the sensitive issue of Israel’s treatment of Palestinian players and officials in the occupied territories, once again condemning Palestine Football Association president JIbril Rajoub (pictured) for trying to get Israel sanctioned and possibly thrown out of FIFA.
