WLF will back clubs and players who refuse to participate in Conmebol’s 2022 qualifiers

August 16 – The World Leagues Forum (WLF) has slammed FIFA’s decision to amend the international match calendar without consultation and which has seen the rescheduling of South America’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers that had originally been due to be played in March 2021 to extended triple match windows in September and March.

Dominguez highlights Conmebol’s €1.3bn revenue return, saying there is more to come

August 5 – The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) distributed $1.3 billion among its associations and clubs between 2016 and 2021, the organisation’s president Alejandro Dominguez claimed in a virtual meeting with his council.

August 4 – Cruzeiro has become the first major Brazilian club to abandon its non-profit entity status in favour of a company structure – ‘Sociedade Anônima’ – as the club moves to restructure its finances.

July 30 – Rio de Janeiro local authorities will allow fully vaccinated fans to attend live matches in September with stadium capacity limited to 50%.

July 27 – In an ongoing public war of words Rogerio Caboclo has said his predecessor Marco Polo Del Nero could end up in prison. Caboclo (pictured), the current CBF president, is suspended over allegations of sexual harassment.

Brazilian sports court rejects Caboclo appeal to allow him to return to run CBF

July 24 – Rogerio Caboclo will not return from suspension to resume the  presidency of the Confederation of Brazilian Sport (CBF), a Brazilian sports court has ruled. The football official has been side lined for 60 days because of sexual harassment allegations.

Club vs country: Flamengo challenge release windows as key players missing for long periods

July 22 – Brazilian giant Flamengo no longer wants to release players for the national team during international windows when those fixtures clash with the domestic calendar and the Rio de Janeiro club is going to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to make its case.

June 28 – Argentine prosecutors have summoned Diego Maradona’s personal physician Leopoldo Luque for questioning in court for his role in the star’s death from heart failure last November. Luque is implicated together with six other doctors.
