December 9 – Two days before LaLiga’s clubs are scheduled to vote on the Impulso Project which will see CVC inject almost €2 billion into the league, the Spanish FA (RFEF) and its president Luis Rubiales have issued a statement against the fund raising and questioning its legality under Spanish law.
December 3 – At the last minute, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao have presented an alternative solution to LaLiga’s planned $2.3 billion investment from CVC.
November 4 – LaLiga has formally opened the bidding process for the domestic sale of domestic audiovisual rights, for the first time extending the license period from three to five seasons and increasing the number of packages of rights available.
November 1 – MSA Capital managing partner Ben Harburg has become a new investor at Spanish La Liga club Cadiz. Harburg is reportedly buying a 6% stake in the club.
October 26 – A study by broadcast research specialists GfK has estimated that illegal access to digital content cost the Spanish economy €682 million in 2020. Piracy is estimated to have cost Spain €5.34 billion since 2012. The equivalent of 130,000 direct and indirect jobs in the industry.
October 7 – LaLiga and Microsoft have combined to launch a new football statistics portal, Beyond Stats, that they say will revolutionise the fan experience with deeper insights into game play.
September 16 – La Liga and Burger King have struck a deal with the fast-food brand attaching its name to Spain’s top flight for three seasons.
September 15 – Following in the footsteps of Valencia, Cadiz FC have become the second La Liga club to strike a crypto partnership as title sponsor, teaming up with Bitci for the current season.
September 15: Having launched their first major foray into blockchain and crypto last week with player card NFTs, in conjunction with fantasy game Sorare, LaLiga this week has followed up this week announcing a deal with Fan Token specialist Socios.com.
September 8 – In a landmark move that could serve as a significant precedent elsewhere in Europe, two of this weekend’s top Spanish league games have been postponed because of players on prolonged international duty with their South American teams.
September 7 – Italy’s Serie A is reportedly back in the hunt for private equity finance plans with Bloomberg indicating they are looking to sell a €1.7 billion stake in the league’s new media rights business.
September 1 – Spanish second division club Real Oviedo have belatedly opted in favour of La Liga’s €2.1 billion agreement with private equity firm CVC.
August 24 – LaLiga’s Levante have filled their vacant shirt sponsorship with a one-season deal with locally-based finance company Gedesco.
August 18– LaLiga, which has struggled to establish a broadcast home in the UK following the non-renewal of its deal with pay TV Sky Sports, is now attacking the British market with distribution into bars and pubs.
August 17 – FC Barcelona president Juan Laporta (pictured) has revealed that the club’s debt has risen to a staggering €1.35 billion with the Catalan supremo blaming his predecessor for the unprecedented financial crisis that also led to the departure of talisman Lionel Messi.
