May 13 – LaLiga president Javier Tebas hit out again at the European Super League (ESL) clubs and the ‘disaster’ they would have unleashed on European Football, as well as again powerfully questioning the motivation and behind-the-scenes actions of FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino.

May 6 – Real Madrid have lost a Spanish court case against LaLiga which challenged the legal right of the league to promote and sell its commercial and broadcast inventory.

April 22 – Spain’s Laliga, and its clubs, are keeping their foot firmly on the pedal of opposition to the now fractured European Super League. With its two biggest clubs – Real Madrid and Barcelona – belligerent in their belief that the ESL is the way forward, the league’s clubs issued a statement rejecting the format, followed by a press conference that forcefully emphasised their unity in opposition.
April 21 – Although the prospect of a breakaway Super League is starting to recede into the distance – for the moment – the wounds are deep and Spain’s LaLiga is not letting some of the statement’s made by Real Madrid’s president Florentino Perez go unanswered.
April 8 – Banco Santander has renewed its title sponsorship of LaLiga for a further two years, with the option to extend for a further year until 2023-24.
April 6 – Valencia’s La Liga fixture at Cádiz on Sunday was suspended for 20 minutes after the visitors walked off the pitch in solidarity with one of their players who said he was subjected to racist abuse.
March 5 – Social media giant Facebook has not renewed its contract to stream the Champions League in Latin America and Spain’s La Liga in India.
March 3 – Spain’s LaLiga has released an economic impact report detailing lost income across its top two divisions and the cuts that clubs have made, in particular with player wages and expenses, as they battle with the financial fall out from the pandemic.
December 16 – Spain’s LaLiga is hiving off its digital product into a new company which it has valued at €450 million and is now being touted to private equity investors.
December 11 – A loan of €67 million has been agreed with 11 clubs, most in LaLiga’s second tier, to help them financially manage their way through the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.
December 4 – Barcelona’s financial crisis has taken a massive hit with Carlos Tusquets, the club’s interim president, announcing that player salaries in January will be postponed.
December 2 – LaLiga has partnered with mobile technology company Mondia group to launch a subscription-based mobile focussed platform offering exclusive content and experiences. Called LaLiga Xtra, the content service will launch “in the coming months”.
November 30 – Spain’s Atlético Madrid will report a net profit of €1.8 million for the 2019/20 season despite debt rising to a massive €999 million, according to reports.
November 27 – LaLiga President Javier Tebas has said he hopes to have fans back in Spanish stadiums in January or February 2021.

November 18 – La Liga has acted to keep club spending under control by reduced salary caps across its two leagues by more than €600 million because of the coronavirus pandemic. Clubs are currently on track to overspend their income by €500 million.
