Airbnb checks in with WSL and creates £1m player accommodation fund

June 5 – Airbnb has continued its sports marketing expansion, becoming the official accommodation and unique experiences partner of English football’s Women’s Super League (WSL) under a new multi-year agreement.

The headline feature in the deal is a £1 million ($1.34 million) Player Accommodation Fund. A three-year programme designed to support players moving clubs in the WSL and second-tier WSL2. Eligible players joining clubs during transfer windows will be able to apply directly through WSL Football for up to $2,000 in Airbnb credit to cover short-term housing.

The structure mirrors a similar Airbnb-IOC partnership unveiled last year, in which the company launched an Athlete Travel Grant offering 500 athletes $2,000 a year in Airbnb credit for training and qualification travel over eight-years, which is an $8 million commitment.

Women’s club football has grown steadily enough in England to justify Airbnb’s bet. The WSL has seen attendance climb 31% since the 2022-23 season (though from a very low start), with WSL2 up 65% over the same period. Airbnb’s own data showed a 15% year-on-year increase in bookings during the final weekend of the 2025-26 fixture list.

Airbnb is targeting sports travel aggressively. It recently added five NASCAR racetracks to its commercial roster, with listings now embedded directly into track websites for race weekends. Last June, Airbnb signed a major multi-tournament agreement with FIFA covering the Club World Cup, the men’s World Cup, and the 2027 Women’s World Cup. The company also struck a partnership with Spain’s LaLiga for the 2025-26 season, and holds a three-year deal with the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes.

By tying its brand to a tangible benefit for players during transfers and potentially one of the most stressful moments of a footballer’s professional life, Airbnb is positioning itself as an active part of the sport’s growth story rather than just a passive sponsor.
