October 12 – As FIFA’s enlarged ruling Council prepares to meet for the first time, the United Nations official responsible for sport has written to the organisation re-iterating that a solution must be found as soon as possible regarding Israeli league teams situated in occupied territory.

Copa Libertadores revamps with addition of 6 more teams for 2017

October 12 – Brazil will be the biggest winner of CONMEBOL’s decision to expand its top club competition, the Copa Libertadores, by six teams. Brazil will have two more representatives in the expanded competition, the South American equivalent of the Champions League.

October 10 – A year and a half after his arrest as part of the FIFA corruption scandal, Costa Rica’s Eduardo Li pleaded guilty on Friday to three charges in a federal courthouse in Brooklyn, New York, admitting he took hundreds and thousands of dollars in bribes.

Salman emphasises AFC unity and stakes claim for World Cup parity

October 10 – The idea of an enlarged World Cup to 40 teams, or even 48, is gaining momentum with Asian Football Confederation (AFC) chief Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa adding his voice, with some caution, to the debate. But caution or not, Salman said that in any enlarged World Cup the AFC would expect to be a major beneficiary.
