October 2 – The referees’ governing body in English professional football has admitted a “significant human error” after Luis Diaz had a goal ruled offside in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday.
August 17 – The match officials who failed to award Wolverhampton Wanderers a late penalty against Manchester United in the opening round of the Premier League have been dropped for the next set of matches.
February 13 – If Arsenal fail to land the Premier League title, they may well look back on Saturday and Sunday’s pivotal VAR decision as one of the reasons.

October 27 – Tottenham got twice the drama at the end of the 90 minutes to draw 1-1 with Sporting Lisbon, leaving group D wide open until next’s week final round of matches. In injury time, Harry Kane had smashed home a winner from close range before VAR chalked off his 22nd Champions League goal.
September 5 – The Premier League continued its love-hate relationship with VAR over the weekend with two controversial and game-changing decisions following VAR intervention.
August 10 – In a move that could revolutionise the game in terms of key on-field calls, semi-automated technology (SAOT) to speed up the time taken to reach offside decisions will be used in European club competition for the first time at the UEFA Super Cup tonight.
July 20 – Zambia’s football association (FAZ) has requested a replay of its Women’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against South Africa after lodging a complaint about the match official in charge.
June 14 – Football’s lawmakers have finally ratified making five substitutes per game instead of three permanent.
April 22 – UEFA will introduce the video assistant referees (VAR) for the last four of the Conference League, the European governing body has announced.
February 10 – Pierluigi Collina, chairman of FIFA’s Referee Committee and FIFA’s Technology and Innovation, has emphasised that the referees and assistants on the field will still have the final decision, despite the advanced trials of the semi-automated offside technology system (SAOT).
February 8 – World football’s lawmakers will once again discuss changes to the offside law at their annual meeting next month, being conducted virtually.
January 20 – Concacaf has said it will roll out the use of VAR across all January and March World Cup qualifiers as well as a number of other national team competitions this year.
November 30 – The use of technology to help officials detect offside more accurately is being trialled at the Arab Cup, which starts today in Qatar.
