July 6 – Concacaf have broken new ground with their officiating teams and is introducing VAR – it debuted in the Preliminary Qualifying rounds last weekend – for the first time.
It is also the first time Concacaf has brought in female assistant referees with two named in the list of 56 elite officials officiating at the Gold Cup.
Brian Hall, the central and north American confederation’s director of refereeing, said: “The referees have been selected based on their on-field performances, as well as their preparation in the courses conducted ahead of the competition. The referees are relishing the prospect of officiating in this tournament and when the first whistle is blown, they will be ready to play their part in the 2021 Gold Cup.”
The officials all participated in a 5-day candidate course which included technical sessions on the field with players, as well as classroom sessions reviewing match situations (offside, handball, challenges, and penalty area incidents). The officials were also required to successfully complete two fitness tests.
As part of the confederation’s development programme for officials – Targeted Advanced Referee Program (TARP) – a number of TARP officials are being given the opportunity to train alongside the elite referees at the Gold Cup.
