January 28 – The two arch rivals will meet today in what the stats suggest should be a fairly even encounter. UAE have defeated Qatar twice in the AFC Asian Cup and Qatar defeated UAE once in their three continental encounters.
The all-time head-to-head, however, show Qatar have won 11 times and UAE 9 times, they have drawn 8 times. They are tied even in the goals scored; both of them scored 32 goals in the 28 internationals played.
So, stats-wise, it won’t be and easy ride either for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup hosts, supported by their enthusiastic fans or for Qatar’s 25 years, 51 days in age average national team.
The two neighbors met in the Asian Cup for the first time in tje 1988 edition when the then-hosts Qatar won 2-1. It was after 19 years, in the AFC Asian Cup 2007 when UAE managed a 2-1 victory over Qatar. In Australia 2015 Asian Cup, UAE posted 4-1 victory.
While Qatar have qualified for the semi-final for the first time in 10 Asian Cup appearances, UAE are enjoying their fourth appearance in the continental semis. They lost twice, first in 1992 against Saudi Arabia 2-0, second in 2015 against hosts Australia 2-0. They posted their only semi-final victory on their home soil in 1996 when they defeated Kuwait 1-0 on the way to the final.
